What Is Radically Open DBT?
RO DBT may be a good fit if you:
Hold yourself to very high standards and struggle when things aren't done "right"
Rarely show emotions, or feel others can't tell what you're feeling
Feel distant, lonely or different from other people
Find it hard to be spontaneous, relax or accept feedback
Have chronic or treatment-resistant depression
Struggle with restrictive eating, such as anorexia nervosa
Have obsessive-compulsive personality traits or long-standing anxiety
Who DBT Can Help
DBT may be a good fit if you experience:
Intense emotions that feel hard to control
Self-harm or recurring suicidal thoughts
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) or BPD traits
Impulsive behaviors, such as substance use, binge eating or spending
Frequent conflict or unstable relationships
Chronic feelings of emptiness or anger
Emotional overwhelm alongside depression, anxiety, PTSD or ADHD
The Four DBT Skills
DBT teaches skills in four areas, each aimed at a different kind of struggle.
Mindfulness
Noticing what you're thinking and feeling in the moment without judging it. Mindfulness is the foundation for every other DBT skill.
Distress Tolerance
Getting through a crisis without making it worse. You'll learn short-term tools for surviving urges and painful moments you can't change right away.
Emotion Regulation
Understanding your emotions, reducing how vulnerable you are to them, and changing the ones you want to change.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Asking for what you need, saying no, and handling conflict while keeping your relationships and your self-respect intact.
What Our DBT Program Includes
Comprehensive DBT:
Weekly individual therapy to apply skills to your own life and goals
Weekly skills group (60 minutes) where you learn and practice the four skill areas
Between-session phone coaching for help using skills in real moments
Therapist consultation team that meets weekly so your clinicians stay effective and consistent
DBT-informed therapy: Individual therapy that teaches and uses DBT skills, without the full program structure. A good option if you want the skills but don't need or can't commit to comprehensive DBT.
What to Expect When You Start DBT
You'll start with an intake assessment to make sure DBT is the right fit. Your therapist will then talk with you about your goals and the commitment involved.
A full cycle through all four skills modules takes about [six] months, and many people complete [two cycles / a year]. You'll get homework, such as practicing skills and tracking emotions on a diary card, because practice between sessions is where most of the change happens.
